Does it matter whether global warming is caused by humans? What if it is caused by normal cyclical changes in climate? It is still going to cause tremendous changes to the earth, changes that are likely to be very disruptive to economies and people's lives.

What if there were something we could do to prevent the oceans rising, the droughts and crop failures, the increase in storm damage?

Whether or not climate change is caused by people, people can reduce greenhouse gases, and slow global warming to a pace we can more easily adapt to.

Will reducing carbon emissions cost too much, and slow economic growth in the countries that strive to mitigate the coming problems? Tony Blair doesn't think so. He cites the UK economy, which grew 36% between 1990
and 2002, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions 15%.

Building the technology to be more energy efficient will create jobs and grow economies. Devices that use less energy allow that saved money to be invested in economic growth. Cleaner fuels save money on medical costs, and lost productivity from unhealthy workers.

Blair has called global warming "...a challenge so far-reaching in its impact and irreversible in its destructive power, that it alters radically human existence." His government is leading the way towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The technology developed in the UK will be sold around the world, reducing energy costs, creating cleaner air, and a healthier environment. Countries that lag behind will miss out on the benefits not just of improving the environment, but of the wealth to be created in these new industries.
